Buying a used boat is a great way to save yourself some money while also getting a good-quality boat that will last you and your family for years. However, because the boat was previously owned, you need to do what you can to ensure that the used boat you want is in excellent shape. Here’s what to look for when inspecting a used boat.

Walk Around the Exterior

Examine the boat on its trailer by walking around the hull of it to look for cracks in the gel coat that could indicate a serious impact that damaged the interior. Make sure there’s no significant rust or corrosion on metal components and that the fabric isn’t worn down excessively.

Check Engine & Fluids

Inspect the boat engine to make sure that it has clean fuel and fresh oil. Look at the spark plugs to see whether they are still in their ceramic casings. Ask when the filters were last replaced.

Get Maintenance Records

Finally, you should ask the seller or dealership for the maintenance records to see how well the previous owner took care of the boat. The records should indicate that regular oil changes, hull cleanings, and professional inspections were performed.
