Pontoons are one of the most popular types of boats on the water for good reason. They are highly versatile, offer plenty of room, and are extremely stable. If you are interested in purchasing a pontoon but are not sure where to start when it comes to finding a model that is right for you, simply follow this guide from Spring Brook Marina.

The Pontoons

Pontoon boats get their name from the structures at the bottom of the craft. These hollow cylinders help make the boat extremely stable. Though two pontoons per boat are considered standard, pontoons with three cylinders called tritoons are also available for those who want more horsepower and better performance in choppy waters. Pontoons can also vary in size, with the standard model having a diameter between 23 and 25 inches.

The Activities

When shopping for pontoons, it is best to look for features that align with how you intend to use the boat. Fishermen should look for layouts that allow them to easily cast from different sides of the boat, accessories like a livewell and rod holders, and slip-resistant vinyl flooring. Watersports enthusiasts will need a model with a powerful engine and sufficient storage space. If you just want to cruise out to a good spot and go swimming, features like a swim deck, improved ladder, and slides can enhance the experience.

The Number Of Passengers

In general, a pontoon boat of 20’ or less will be sufficient for up to 5 passengers. If you have more than 5 but less than 10, look at pontoon boats between 20’ to 24’ in length. Parties of 10 or more call for a 24’ or longer boat, though you should keep in mind that larger pontoon boats will be more expensive. Do not overspend on a model that offers more passenger room than you will need.

The Ideal Horsepower

How much engine power you need depends on how you intend to use the boat. For leisurely cruises, around 40 HP should be fine. On the other hand, activities like watersports will require a lot more engine power, so look for models with 300 HP or more.

The Price

If you are worried about keeping costs down, consider purchasing a used pontoon boat. If you want to save money but still want a new boat, try purchasing a new model from the previous year. You can also wait for the off-season to make your purchase, as this tends to be the best time to get a great deal.
