Used Pontoon Inspection Guide

Used pontoons are affordable, provide plenty of passenger space, and can be used for a variety of different activities. Before you purchase a used pontoon boat, though, you’ll want to inspect it to get a better idea of its overall condition. This guide from Spring Brook Marina & Yacht Sales will walk you through the steps of inspecting your used pontoon boat.

Check the Hull

Start by taking a look at the used pontoon’s hull. Small cracks, dents, and other imperfections aren’t unusual, but the hull’s condition can tell you a lot about how well previous owners took care of the vessel. For example, an intact gelcoat that is smooth and shiny usually means that previous owners took the time and effort to maintain the vessel. 

Inspect the Flooring and Furniture

Your next step will be to inspect the used pontoon’s flooring. Check to see if any part of the floor is soft, discolored, or uneven. Boat flooring is expensive to replace, and you don’t want to have to foot the bill if something goes wrong. You should also take a look at the boat’s seating. Minor tears are easy enough to fix, but mold and mildew often indicate that previous owners were negligent when it came to maintenance. Be sure to check the used pontoon’s nooks and crannies. Some owners only deal with visible issues, leaving deeper but less visible problems to get worse over time. 

Test the Motor

Finally, check the used pontoon boat’s engine. Perform a visual inspection, noting any leaks, cracks, or other obvious signs of damage. Ask the seller if you can take the boat for a test drive, or at least run the motor to see if it functions normally. As the motor runs, pay attention to see if it makes any unusual noises or vibrations. Perform a few sharp turns to see how well the engine performs.
